Research Interests
Dr. McLean has gained in excess of $4.5 million in competitive grants for aquaculture
and commercial fisheries research and has participated on a number of committees
relating to aquaculture development issues including those funded through Sea
Grant and the International Oceanographic Commission. His research focuses
attention upon production physiology of cultured animals with emphasis upon
growth and end product quality. However he has broad research interests.
Personal Information
Dr. Ewen McLean received his B.S. degree in Fisheries Science with honors from
the University of East London in 1980. He was awarded an M.S. in Applied Fish
Biology from the University of Plymouth in 1981 and his Ph.D. in Fish Physiology
from Bradford, UK in 1987. Dr. McLean spent 5 years with the Department of Fisheries & Oceans’ West
Vancouver Laboratory, specializing in growth control of fish with emphasis upon
drug delivery systems. After 7 years as Research Leader and Head of the Aquaculture
Biotechnology section in Aalborg University Denmark, he was appointed to the
Head of Department of Marine Science and Fisheries, at Sultan Qaboos University,
Oman. Dr. McLean has worked as a consultant in numerous aquaculture-related fields
in the international arena an served as a member of the Scientific Council of
the Swedish Aquaculture Association and was involved in developing the National
Aquaculture Development Strategy for the Sultanate of Oman. He and presently
serves on the Editorial Boards of eight journals, including Aquaculture and Aquaculture
Nutrition.
