Fulbright Scholar Begins Research

Starting with the fall 2004 semester, Dr. Alia Bano Munshi began a Fulbright Scholarship at Virginia Tech, with Drs. Greg Boardman and George Flick as advisors. Dr. Munshi’s project involves analyzing the persistent activity of endocrine disruptors, such as pesticides, PCBs, alkylphenols, steroids, and phthalates in growing waters and in wild-caught fish, clams, and crabs from various locations in Virginia. Dr. Munshi will be working with Jean Cobb in the pesticide lab to analyze pesticide residues, PCBs and phthalates, as well as in the Department of Environmental Engineering for the gas chromatography and mass spectrophotometry analyses.

Greg Boardman remarks, “George Flick and I have enjoyed working with Dr. Alia Munshi through the fall and look forward to the coming months as she begins to analyze the results of her laboratory efforts. Her Fulbright scholarship has indeed been beneficial for both Alia and us. Before joining our research team, Alia was already a talented researcher and an expert in gas chromatography, but at Virginia Tech she’s gained experience with some additional analytical tools. Her work here will serve as the basis for a continuum of research that will ultimately help to demonstrate the significance of pesticide residuals in fish and shellfish.”

Dr. Munshi earned a Ph.D. and M.Phil (Master of Philosophy) in Marine Biology, M.Sc, and B.Sc (Hons) degree in Physiology from University of Karachi, Pakistan. She is the Principal Scientific Officer at PCSIR Laboratories Complex in Karachi, and has more than 18 years of research experience in food science, safety, and new product development. She has published extensively on the effects of heavy metal and pesticide bioaccumulation in numerous marine species. The Fulbright Program selects scholars who exhibit a high degree of leadership potential, and is the flagship U.S. program for international education exchange. Dr. Munshi will be at Virginia Tech through May of 2005.
