Daniel Taylor Joins CFAST
Dr. Dan Taylor, a professor in the department of Agricultural and Applied
Economics recently joined the faculty of CFAST, filling the shoes of
Dr. Charles Coale, Jr., who retired in 2002. Dr. Taylor is a specialist
in mathematical programming models, and the majority of his research
has blended production and resource economics as part of an interdisciplinary
research team. His research has included a variety of topics, from agribusiness
issues in Virginia to assessing the effects of risk on the business practices
of spice growers in Sri Lanka. Currently, his research is focused on
developing sustainable agricultural production systems both domestically
and internationally. He is also studying the development of women’s
economic issues in Africa. Dr. Taylor will be field testing and refining
the economic analysis in the Aquaculture Production Model developed under
the direction of Professor Emeritus Charles Coale. In particular, price
and production risks will be incorporated in the model using the Excel
spreadsheet software @Risk, in order to more realistically assess the
economic environment faced by aquacultural producers.
Professor Taylor
serves as an instructor of applied microeconomics, mathematics for economists,
and mathematical programming courses as well as a member of the
Ph.D. Qualifying Exam and Graduate Advisory Committees. He is also the current
graduate coordinator for the department. Dr. Taylor earned his Ph.D. in 1982
from Washington State University. “We are very fortunate to have Dan Taylor
join our team, and we look forward to having his expertise on the projects we’ve
got underway,” said CFAST coordinator George Flick.
